Background:

Lao PDR has come onboard as one of the countries in the region to receive support to undertake the CRVS inequality assessment. The project seeks to provide technical support and capacity strengthening to the Lao Statistics Bureau and other relevant national stakeholders to facilitate the implementation of CRVS inequality assessments using secondary data sources in Lao PDR. This will involve building capacity for demographic analysis to undertake inequality assessments in the future as well as for initiating dialogue with policy-makers to ensure the results are used for policy formulation.

The first three-day national capacity building workshop was a hands-on workshop, which was designed based on the country’s needs and the project’s objective to build skills in analyzing data to assess inequalities in registration of births and deaths. The workshop supplemented lectures with practical sessions and exercises, which were developed by the CRVS national consultant based on real data from Lao PDR. Participants comprised Lao Statistics Bureau staff and stakeholders from relevant ministries.
