Asia-Pacific Regional Conference on Population Ageing: Technology and Population Ageing sessions

-

ESCAP, in partnership with HelpAge India, was organizing two sessions on technology and population ageing at the 2024 Asia-Pacific Regional Conference on Population Ageing. This Conference was co-hosted by HelpAge International, the Ministry of National Development Planning (BAPPENAS) of Indonesia and UNFPA, and supported by Age International, ESCAP and the Tsao Foundation. The overarching theme of the Conference was “Reframing Ageing,” with a focus on mainstreaming ageing in national development plans and recognizing older persons as valuable contributors to society. These sessions specifically explored how technological innovations can help reframe and redefine the societal roles of older persons, not just as beneficiaries but as active participants and innovators in the digital realm.

Session 1: Harnessing technology for enhanced quality of life in ageing societies

11 September 2024 (16:15-17:45, UTC+8)

The rapid advancement of technology offered unprecedented opportunities to improve the quality of life for older persons. From healthcare to social connections, technology could play a pivotal role in addressing the unique challenges and opportunities faced by ageing populations. This session aimed to explore how different technological innovations could be leveraged to enhance the well-being of older persons, fostering a more inclusive and supportive environment. Additionally, smart home technologies and assistive devices could support independent living, allowing older persons to age in place with dignity. The session also explored how technology intersects with age-friendly community initiatives, ensuring that older persons were included in these broader societal changes.

Session 2: How can technology bridge the digital divide and strengthen intergenerational relations?

12 September 2024 (11:00-12:30, UTC+8)

As technology became increasingly integrated into daily life, it was essential to address the policy and regulatory frameworks that ensure its equitable and inclusive use. This session focused on developing actionable policy recommendations and strategies on how technology could contribute to positive intergenerational relations. The discussion highlighted the importance of equitable access to technology, inclusive technology development and the role of intergenerational collaboration in promoting digital literacy, safe and responsible computing, and lifelong learning opportunities.
