This report documents the first meeting convened by HelpAge International and the Social Development Division of UN-ESCAP to initiate a dialogue on ageing issues among NGOs, government departments, and academic bodies in the Mekong Basin region. The region is defined as Northern Thailand, Myanmar, Vietnam, Laos (Lao PDR), Cambodia, and Yunnan province in Southern China. The workshop, which received financial support from the South East Asia Regional Canada Fund in Singapore and the New Zealand Embassy in Bangkok, aimed to foster collaboration and develop concrete outcomes to improve the well-being of older people in these countries.
The initiative addressed the major demographic shift characterized by the dramatic growth of the older population in Asia—projected to reach 1.4 billion globally by 2030—and the rising costs of income security and health care for these groups. Discussions recognized that rapid economic growth and urbanization are dislocating traditional family care patterns, placing extra pressure on main care-givers (women) and increasing the vulnerability and poverty among older persons. The workshop's specific objectives included providing up-to-date demographic information, assisting in the development of national action plans, and creating permanent country and regional networks for policy coordination and information exchange
