Background
Artificial intelligence (AI) can transform the world and accelerate the achievement of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development. However, AI also poses significant challenges and risks, such as ethical dilemmas, human rights implications, social and economic impacts, and governance issues. Therefore, it is essential to ensure that AI is aligned with the values and principles of the United Nations and that it is used for the common good of humanity and the planet.
The Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP), the UN's regional arm in Asia and the Pacific, supports member states in harnessing AI for sustainable development, aligning with the Secretary-General's Roadmap for Digital Cooperation. It promotes regional dialogue, inclusive AI policies, and knowledge exchange. Microsoft, a global AI leader, is committed to ethical AI development, following its principles and the UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights. As a founding member of the Partnership on AI and a UN Global Pulse partner, Microsoft collaborates to advance best practices in AI for development and humanitarian efforts.
In a significant stride towards leveraging technology for global good, Microsoft and ESCAP are set to sign a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA). This collaboration aims to harness the power of AI to address pressing socio-economic challenges in the Asia-Pacific region.
To mark this momentous occasion, a Vision Fireside Chat is organized in conjunction with the signing ceremony. This event will bring together thought leaders to discuss the transformative potential of AI and the strategic objectives of our partnership.
